SUDDEN STOP IN JORDAN When traveling, sometimes the least likely places end up being the most fun. While barreling down a lone dusty road toward Jordan’s Wadi Rum desert, one of my friends suddenly yelled, “Stop!” Our Jordanian driver obliged, having no idea what could be so compelling in the middle of nowhere. “We need to take pictures here,” she said, “at this Wes Anderson-esque café!” She was right about the reference and before long, there we all were smiling and posing in front of this singular sun-baked  building, with colorful graphics and a worn charm all its own. While making us coffees, the bemused proprietor watched our impromptu photo shoot, hopefully gaining new-found pride in his desert outpost. Read the full story

HELSINKI HERITAGE My grandmother was Finnish and spent a good deal of her youth in Helsinki. While my sister and I didn’t know much about her childhood, we recently traveled to Helsinki with a couple of clues in hand. Via the city archives, we ended up locating the apartment  building where Grandma Meri lived with her aunt and the elementary school she attended, shown in this photo. It wasn’t much, but for us, it was still kind of moving to think she walked those streets every day and studied at that lovely school across the street from a park full of white lilacs.

FINDING THE FINGER LAKES On assignment for Valley Table Magazine, I happily discovered a small, award-winning Finger Lakes winery called Kemmeter. While the wines were impressive, the homemade dumplings served by Imelda Reinhardt, the winemaker's wife, were beyond delicious. A glass of dry Riesling, sauteed lamb dumplings, fresh salad and a view of Keuka Lake made for a perfect afternoon. Read the full story

While alpacas are pleasant and curious, they're usually not as friendly as Faraway Farm's Layla. After the shoot, she relaxed in the sun, letting me bury my hands in her thick fleece just a week before it was sheared.
